Abstract

271,933. Thomas, C. O. Feb. 4, 1926. Universal joints.-Flexible shaft couplings allowing angular and axial movements comprise a hub with a sphericallysurfaced circumferential flange, axially movable in a sleeve, the hub flange and sleeve having registering longitudinal grooves engaged by drive-transmitting elements. The double joint shown in Fig. 2 comprises hubs 13, 14, secured to shafts 11, 12, and a divided sleeve 15, respectively, with external and internal flanges 18, 19. The flanges 18 have spherical surfaces contacting with the cylindrical surfaces of the flanges 19, and are provided with semi-cylindrical or other longitudinal grooves 20 with rounded edges, preferably parallel to the hub axes, and adapted to register with like, but longer, grooves 21 in the flanges 19. The grooves are preferably formed by drilling holes simultaneously in the flanges 18, 19 before the flanges 18 are made spherical. The ends of the grooves 20 are closed, as by rings 22, 23 screwed, welded, or shrunk on to the hubs, to retain solid or hollow driving-members, such as doubletapered round or rectangular pins 16. The pins 16 are preferably barrel-shaped, their outer surfaces lying on spheres concentric with the surfaces of the flanges 18, and their ends 24 rounded to allow rocking. The sleeve 15 has oil-retaining rings 25 and plugs 26 to form an oil-bath, whereby lubricant is fed under centrifugal pressure to the working parts, which lie at the maximum internal radius of the coupling. Oil passages may be formed through the flanges 19 or pins 16, and the hubs may be reduced at 27 to increase the capacity, while the sleeve may also be reduced at 28 to concentrate the oil at the ends. The surface 28 may slide on the rings 23 when the sleeve-halves are separated, in order to locate the parts and indicate misalignment. Fig. 4 shows a modification, wherein the hub grooves 20 are longer than the sleeve grooves 21, the pins 16 being retained by the rings 25 and rings 23a sprung into grooves 29. A single joint may be used. The Provisional Specification describes joints with plain cylindrical pins, helically-wound cylindrical or barrel-shaped pins, flat-ended pins, and balls, and with coacting grooves tapered towards their middles.
