Abstract

444,354. Universal joints. RICEFIELD, L., 154, North Humphrey Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A. Dec. 29, 1934, No. 37282. [Class 80 (ii)] Resilient power-transmitting members 16 of rubberized fabric or the like are individually and detachably retained between interengaging axial lugs 10c, 11c on shaft members 10, 11, by axial pins 17, screwed to one of the latter, and loosely fitting in metal-lined apertures 16c in the resilient members outside their contact-area with the lugs. The resilient members can thus tilt on the pins to allow misalignment and all other relative movements in the joint. The curved inner ends of the resilient members rest on internal hubs on the shaft-members. As shown in Fig. 5, the lugs may taper radially outwards along curved or straight lines, so as to compress all parts of the correspondingly-shaped resilient members to the same degree. The lugs, but not the resilient members, may diverge axially away from their shaft-members, so as to tend to draw the latter together under torque.
