Abstract

818,803. Universal joints; shaft couplings. BLACKSTONE & CO. Ltd. Dec. 31, 1937 [Dec. 37, 1956], No. 39697/56. Class 80 (2). A coupling for transmitting drive from the shaft 1 of an internal-combustion engine to a driven shaft 13 comprises a frusto-conical housing 3 fast with which is a damping device B connected in parallel with rubber rings 10, 14 to dished plates 11 secured to the driven shaft, the outer plates 5, 6 of the damping device being bonded to the rubber rings 10, 14 which are in turn bonded to the dished plates 11 while the inner plates of the damping device are fast with a hub 7 secured to the dished plates 11, axial pins 8 attached to the frusto-conical housing 3 carrying rubber bushes 9 interdigitating with metal fingers 17 fast with the driven shaft. On relative rotation between the driving and driven shafts 1, 13, the rubber rings 10, 14 are stressed in torsion and ultimately the rubber bushes 9 engage the metal fingers 17, thus limiting the lost-motion between the driving and driven shafts. The damping device B may be of the friction, hydraulic or viscous fluid type. Specification 692,954 is referred to.
