Abstract

939,074. Slip couplings; friction clutches; universal joints; linkwork. TWIFLEX COUPLINGS Ltd. April 19, 1962 [April 19, 1961], No. 14115/61. Classes 80 (2) and 80 (3). To dampen out torsional vibrations in a transmission producing vibrational nodes in driven machine shafting, e.g. in a propeller or pump or gear-box drive, a coupling which slips at a small increase in torque over that normally transmitted is arranged in series with a torsionally resilient coupling, the torsional resilience being so selected that a node or maximum vibratory torque occurs at or near the locality of the slip coupling. In one form the torsionally resilient coupling is a universal joint, in which a shaft 10 is bolted to a hub 15 formed with radial arms 16 having eyes within which are fixed rubber bushes bonded between inner and outer steel sleeves 28, the inner sleeves being connected by bolts to pairs of links 36 in turn containing further rubber bushes 28 &c. connected by bolts 38 to further pairs of links 34 secured to the inner sleeves of rubber bushes &c. fast in eyes in radial arms 27 on a hub 25. The rubber bushes, sleeves 28 &c. are secured in their respective eyes by set screws 29 which permit angular adjustment of the bushes and of the various links 34, 36 according to the torque to be transmitted. The hub 25 is journalled on a spigot 18 fast with the shaft 10, and through rubber bushes &c. mounts links 51 carrying at their outer ends further rubber bushes &c. supporting coupling shoes 52 frictionally engaging a drum 24 fast with a shaft 11. The rubber bushes at each end of the links 51 are so arranged that the shoes 52 have to be pushed radially inwards when they are inserted into the drum 24. On rotation of the transmission, centrifugal force increases the frictional engagement of the shoes 52 with the drum 24. Alternatively, the engagement may be effected pneumatically or hydraulically. In one modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shoes &c. of the slip coupling are replaced by a clutch having friction pads straddling a disc fast with the shaft 11 and biased to engage with the disc by hydraulic servos. In another form, Fig. 4 (not shown), a friction disc clutch is engaged by an hydraulic or pneumatic servo in accordance with the speed of rotation of the transmission.
