Abstract
812,001. Shaft couplings; clutches. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO. Ltd. Aug. 13, 1956 [Oct. 4, 1955], No. 28182/55. Class 80 (2). A centrifugal clutch has a resilient torsional coupling in which all the resilient means transmit torque in one direction of rotation and only part of the resilient means transmit torque in the opposite direction in the same direction of rotation. A centrifugal clutch drum 1 has bolted thereto two annular members 5, 7 spaced by spacers 17, 19 and having arcuate receivers for the reception of six compression springs 13. The rings 5, 7 have a plurality of radial slots 4 containing abutment members 21 for the springs 13. A splined shaft 3, also secured to the drum 2 carries a sleeve 31 which forms a bearing for an outer sleeve 24 having a driving flange 25 at one end, and a radial plate 9 rigid therewith at the other end. The plate 9 is located between the rings 5, 7 and has radial gaps 6, whose width is that of the length of a spring 13, and gaps 8 whose width is greater than the length of a spring, the gaps being arranged such that on the transmission of torque from the drum 1 to the flange 25 in the direction of the arrow A all the springs transmit the drive from the rings 5, 7 to the plate 9, and on torque transmission from flange 25 to drum 1 in the same direction only three of the springs transmit the drive. The ratio of the springs transmitting the drive in each direction may be modified.
