Abstract

858,472. Flexible couplings. BENDIX CORPORATION, [formerly BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION]. Feb. 17,. 1959, No. 5498/59. Class 80 (2). A flexible coupling between driving and driven members 11, 12 comprises assemblies 14, 15 of flexible annular diaphragms connected to a telescopic transmission shaft 13 incorporating a torque - limiting clutch 57. Each of the assemblies 14, 15 consists of a series of pairs of interconnected diaphragms 25, each flat on one side and contoured on the other to produce uniform torsional and bending stresses in operation. The outer peripheries of each pair of diaphragms are secured to annular spacer rings by rivets 33, and the inner peripheries are formed with circumferential teeth 36 pressed into engagement by U-section spring rings 40. Each assembly may pivot about a ball joint 82, a lubricator 75 being fitted on the bearing retainer 73. The torque-limiting clutch comprises interleaved discs 57 pressed into engagement by Belleville springs 58 with an adjusting ring nut 59. The telescopic shaft 13 comprises inner and outer members 55, 63 interconnected by short splines 65 on member 55 and long splines 66 on member 63, and a locking ring 67 and seal 68 are provided at the end of member 63.
