Abstract

717,388. Slipping clutches; yielding couplings. SHEPPEE MOTOR & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1952, No. 21898/52. Class 80 (2) An overload release clutch comprises a first clutch member 14, interposed between a surface of friction material 13 rotatable with a second clutch member 11, 16, and a plurality of elements such as balls 18 carried in angularly spaced relationship by the second clutch member and urged resiliently in an axial direction for drive transmission engagement into recesses in' the first clutch member, the said elements being displaceable axially relative to the second clutch member in guides 16a of hardened steel and the recesses being so formed that the elements 18 are forced out of them at a predetermined load. As shown, the first clutch member is a driving V-pulley, the second clutch member 11, 16 being driven thereby. The recesses consist of radial grooves in a hard steel ring 15 and the balls are pressed into them by springs 20 in a collar 21 keyed to the shaft 11. In a modification (Figs. 5, 6, not shown), the member 14 is a sprocket and the springs 20 are replaced by a single helical spring surrounding the hub. The clutch can be made to operate a switch on overload by passing studs through the springs 20 to engage the balls 18 and connecting the studs to a plate in contact with a roller on the end of the switch arm. Ball-ended plungers may be used instead of the balls 18.
