Abstract
728,875. Friction clutches. LAMBERT BRAKE CORPORATION. June 11, 1953 [June 11, 1952], No, 16171/53. Class 80 (2). A friction clutch comprises a plurality of discs 12, 13, splined at 10, 11 to inpizt or output members 4, 8 respectively, engaged initially by springs 38, 39 self-energization by cam balls 43. following, the discs running in oil and having passages therefor-extending therethrough. The engaging springs 38, 39 act between a member. 23 and a plate 18 freely mounted on the member 8. The member 23 is keyed at 24 to the member 8, but is adjustable axially by means of a nut 27 locked, by a tab washer 28. The line of action of the springs is inclined to the axis of the clutch whereby a rotation of the plate 18 relative to the member 23 occurs upon initial movement. This rotation causes the cam balls 43 to ride up cam faces 42 on the members 18, 23 and self-energization of the clutch follows. Spring force is transmitted through caps 36 having spherical seats 37 engaging projections 34, 35 on the members 1,8, 23. To disengage the clutch a lever 64 is rocked about pivots 65, thus transmitting an axial force to the plate 18 through trunnions 63, ring 59, thrust bearing 55 and bolts (Fig. 6, not shown) connecting the plate 18 to the member 44. The discs 12 have holes 69 disposed within the inner periphery of the discs 13 to give a continuous passage for oil from end to end of the clutch discs. Holes 66, 67 and 68 in the member 4 and plates 17, 18 allow entry of oil to the discs. Helical grooves 70 are formed in the friction faces, which are preferably of brass, of the discs 13. The oil film on the discs is rapidly forced into these grooves upon engagement. Input or output shafts are received by splines 5, 9 on the members 4, 8.
