Abstract

966,106. Universal joints. AEON PRODUCTS (LONDON) Ltd. Dec. 2, 1960 [Dec. 4, 1959], No. 41634/60. Headings F2C and F2U. A universal joint which permits several hundred degrees relative rotation between driving and driven shafts 5, 6 to prevent the transmission of shocks therebetween comprises a flexible sleeve 3 connected to one or both of the shafts 5, 6 by means which convert part of the torque into an axial thrust which compresses the sleeve 3. As shown, the sleeve 3 is fast with nuts 8, 8<SP>1</SP> engaging screw-threads 9, 9<SP>1</SP> on the shafts 6, 5 respectively. Stops 11, 12; 11<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> limit the axial movement of the nuts 8, 81. The screw-and-nut means may be replaced by a ball spline; a flange, Fig. 3 (not shown), fast with the sleeve having an inwardly projecting pin engaging a helical slot in the shaft; a resilient sleeve, Fig. 4 (not shown), between two flanges respectively fast with the shaft and sleeve; or by an equivalent linkage system. In Figs. 4, 6 and 8 (not shown), the screw-and-nut means 9, 10 or an equivalent system is provided between the sleeve 3 and one of the shafts 5, 6 only the other shaft being rigidly connected to the sleeve. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) a casing surrounds the sleeve 3 and centrifugal masses are attached to the sleeve to assist the latter to expand radially during axial compression. In Fig. 7, flexible sleeves 3 on each shaft 5, 6 carry centrifugal weights 16 and are braced between screw-thread 9, 9<SP>1</SP> and stops 19, 18. On rotation of the shaft 5 in one direction, the flexible sleeve 3 expands to engage the housing 15 to rotate the latter and engagement between the sleeve 3 and conical part of the housing produces a leftward axial thrust on the housing. The Specification states that this rotation and thrust on the housing causes the bearing 17 to transmit torque to the stop 19 and shaft 6 whereupon the other sleeve 3 expands into engagement with the housing.
