Abstract

753,947. Overload slip clutches; universal joints. YATES, H. July 7, 1954, No. 19895/54. Class 80(2) A clutch which slips on overload comprises a sleeve c, keyed on a shaft a, carrying axially directed blade springs e having part spherical studs i at their ends engaging in axial grooves j in a sleeve d keyed to shaft b. On overload, the studs i ride out of the grooves j and give audible warning that the clutch is slipping. Shims h allow the radial distance of the springs e from the shaft a to be adjusted. In the form shown, the clutch allows universal movement between the shafts a, b, but in a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the grooves j are formed in a hub secured to a pinion journalled on the shaft to which the sleeve is keyed. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (also not shown), the part spherical studs i are carried on the radially outer sides of the springs e and engage in axial grooves j on the inside of a cylindrical recess in a V-belt pulley journalled on the shaft to which the sleeve c is keyed.
