Abstract

479,629. Universal joints. RICEFIELD, L. Dec. 23, 1936, No. 35279. Convention Dec. 28, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] Power-transmitting blocks 26, preferably of resilient material interposed between loosely interengaging radial jaws 20a on one coupling - element 21 and axial jaws 19a on another 20, are loosely retained against radial and axial movement by the hub of one element 21 and by wings 26b, projecting axially from the blocks 26 to underly a ring 28, detachably secured by axial screws 29 to and shoulders 20d on the other element 20. To form a single joint, the elements 20, 21 are directly secured to shafts, but in the double joint shown, two pairs of coupling-elements are provided, the intermediate elements 20, 20 being secured together by screws 19. The elements 20 have rounded hubs 20b for centring them in the coacting coupling-elements 21, and discs 27 of cushioning material such as rubber, may be interposed between the hubs and the shaftends. Similar discs 30 may be interposed between either or both rings 28 and their coupling-elements 20. The power-transmitting blocks 26 are formed of vulcanized or cemented layers of rubber, rubberized duck or leather, and their driving faces may diverge outwards along curved or straight lines. The joint permits relative axial, lateral and angular movements.
