Abstract

879,064. Universal joints. FENNER & CO. Ltd., J. H. Dec. 1, 1959 [Sept. 19, 1959], No. 31978/59. Class 80 (2). A universal joint comprises an outwardly divergent disc 8 of rubber bonded to metal plates 7 which are connected to driving and driven flanges 9, as shown, by flanges 7a engaging recesses 9a or by welding or riveting. The flanges 9 are connected to driving and driven shafts by split bushes 11 as described in Specification 592,912. In Fig. 6, Provisional (not shown), two coupling discs 8 are interposed side by side between the flanges 9, the adjacent plates 7 engaging a floating coupling ring. In Fig. 4, Provisional (not shown), the flanges 7a are coated with the rubber. In Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), the flanges 7a are axially tapered and engage tapered recesses 9a, the bases of which are tapered and have a rounded leading edge to provide a line contact with the flanges, thus reducing wear.
