Abstract

493,219. Universal joints. HARDY, SPICER, & CO., Ltd., and DANIELL, J. A. May 26, 1937, No. 14575. [Class 80 (ii)] Flat external surfaces 12, of an intermediate coupling- member 11, are engaged by rubber or like flexible pads 13, the outer surfaces of which are engaged by members 16 secured alternately to coupled shaft - members 22. The faces of the pads 13 are provided with cup-shaped pressings, the inner 14 of which have out-turned flanges 15 for locating them on the coupling-member 11, whilst the outer pressings 17 may be welded or otherwise positively secured in openings in the shaft-members 16. Studs 20, Figs. 1 and 2, or bolts 20, Fig. 4, positively secure the shaftmembers 16 to the coupling-member 11 and pass with clearance through the rubber pads and cupped pressings. In Fig. 4, additional outer rubber pads 26 are provided, both pads 13, 26 being located on the shaft-members 16 by out-turned flanges 18 on their cupped pressings 17, 25. In Figs. 1 and 2, the studs 20 act on the outer cupped pressings 17 through spring-washers 19.
