Abstract

616,987. Universal joints. PITTALUGA, G. July 12, 1946, Nos. 20968 and 20969. Convention dates, July 12, 1945, and Dec. 27, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A universal joint comprises a series arrangement of more than two metal discs or rings 1, Figs. 1 and 3, having coacting alternating projections 2 on their opposed faces and being held together by incorporation in natural or synthetic rubber or other resilient discs or rings 3 having portions engaged between the projections to transmit torque in compression. The rubber discs or rings may be separate or form one integral body as shown, and alternate portions in any disc or ring may be of equal or differing extent, or the portions on one side of each projection may be omitted. The number of portions and, in the disc construction, the size of the discs, may vary from one rubber member to another, and, where the rubber members are separate, they may be of differing compositions. Lateral expansion of the rubber under compression may be absorbed by spaces 4, formed by chemical or mechanical means during manufacture, or, if no spaces are provided, by axial expansion of the joint, which expansion may be opposed by yielding means adjustable to control the flexibility. Joints may be made of any desired length and cut down afterwards as required.
