861,669. Resilient shaft couplings universal joints. HACKFORTH, B. Feb. 24, 1959 [Feb. 25, 1958], No. 6406/59. Class 80 (2). A resilient shaft. coupling comprises arms 7 fixed to, and projecting axially from, a sleeve 5 keyed to one shaft, and alternating with arms 8 similarly projecting from a sleeve keyed to the second shaft. Gas-filled rubber containers 9 are provided between each adjacent pair of arms 7, 8, the containers being clamped by rings 12 to the side walls of the arms, and compressed air being supplied thereto through nipples 11, the hollow interior of the arms and passages 10. A throttle-valve with a variable restriction may be provided in each passage 10. The containers may all be interconnected by gas passages, or groups of containers may be so interconnected. The coupling permits relative axial and angular movement of the shafts as well as relative rotary movement.
