Abstract

613,788. Universal joints. WEYBURN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and ELLIS, L. J. July 3, 1946, No. 19895. [Class 80 (ii)] A universal joint, which may be employed in the drive for a tool, comprises an Oldham coupling in which the main members A, B and the intermediate member C are coupled by balls or rollers D, E engaging cylindrical recesses A', C<1> and B<1>, C<2>, each formed half in the main member and half in the intermediate member, the recesses have their axes radial and are at opposite ends of coplanar diameters which are at right angles. To allow the four balls D, E to lie in one plane, the grooves A<1> are formed in a rib A<2> on the driving member A, which rib projects into a recess C<3> in the intermediate member C, and similarly the driven member B is recessed at B<2> for this purpose. The coupling is enclosed in a cover F having a part-spherical surface F<2> against which bears a ring G having a corresponding surface G<2> and also a flat annular surface G<1> which bears against the member B. Springs A<4>, B3, B<4> centre the joint when not subjected to load. In a modification, the driven member B may extend to the right through an .aperture in the intermediate member and be contained within the driving member to reduce the overall length.
