Abstract

679,513. Universal joints. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 19, 1950 [June 24, 1949], No. 12647/50. Class 80 (ii). A flexible coupling between rotary members 17, 25 comprises an assembly of flexible annular elements 20 each having outwardlyextending end flanges 21, adjacent flanges being bolted together at their outer edges and the terminal flanges being bolted at their outer edges to the members 17, 25, while a ball-andsocket joint 27, 31 is disposed within the assembly. The socket 31 is secured in the member 17 by a nut 35 on a screwed shank 33 passing through a bushing 34, both the shank and the bushing being slightly eccentric so that the ball 27 can be accurately centered. As shown, driving and driven members 10, 11 are connected by a pair of such couplings 17, 25 and 17', 25', with an interposed quill shaft 12 splined in the members 25, 25', the shaft being held against axial movement in the member 25 by a split ring 44 while being capable of axial movement in the member 25'. Shaft 12 has a guide bearing 19 in a tube 40 secured at one end to member 25 and slidable at the other end in member 25'.
