Abstract

1,178,706. Universal joints. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 11 Oct., 1967 [13 Oct., 1966], No. 45757/66. Heading F2U. A universal joint consists of a flexible corrugated sleeve 13 reinforced with filamentary material and whose ends are connected to flanges 8, 9 on the driving and driven shafts 1, 2, the diameter of the end portions of the sleeve being not less than the maximum diameter of the intermediate portion of the sleeve. As shown the ends of shafts 1, 2 are connected by a ball and socket joint 3, 4, the flange 8 being secured to shaft 1 by a screw 10, while flange 9 is free to move axially along end splines 5 on shaft 2. The peripheries of flanges 8, 9 are flared outwardly and with cone rings 14, 15 and rivets 16 serve to secure the ends of sleeve 13. The latter is preferably made of rubber reinforced with oppositely biased plies 20, 21 of steel cord fabric.
