Abstract
695,015. Pipe joints. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd. Jan. 26, 1951 [Feb. 1, 1950], No. 2617/50. Class 99 (i). In a flexible coupling adapted to permit relative angular displacement of two coupled tubes 3, 3a, whilst being capable of withstanding tensile loads on these tubes, consisting of two rings 1, 1a in line with each other, one fixed on one end of one tube and the other fixed on the adjacent end of the other tube, a plurality of pulleys 4 disposed around each of the rings and a flexible cord 7 being interlaced in series around the pulleys to form an endless cord pulling the two rings together, there is provided a sleeve 9 extending through the rings to join the two tubes together. The flanges on the ends of the tubes 3. 3a are each secured to the outer flange 2, 2a of the rings 1, 1a, the inner flange of each of the latter having the pulleys 4 mounted thereon by radial pins 5, which are either held in position by straps 6. 6a or screwed into the rings 1, 1a. The flexible cord 7 may either have the ends fastened together or to the rings. Each ring is flanged to accommodate the sleeve 9, one end of which embodies a spherical bearing surface 10 for the inner surface of one of the rings; a flexible metal bellows 11 is secured between the two rings 1, 1a. The sleeve 9 may be formed integral with one of the rings and the pulleys mounted on flanges formed on the tube ends. The joint is disconnected by removing the pulleys.
