Abstract

807,336. Flexible pipe joints. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. Oct. 9, 1956 [Oct 14, 1955], No. 29400/55. Class 99(1). A sleeve 12 overlaps flanges 7, 8 secured to the ends 5, 6 of ducts, fluidtightness being effected by deformable rings 15 of rubber or synthetic resin or hollow metal filled with an inert gas, the joint permitting relative movement by rolling action between sleeve, rings and flanges. The ducts have flanges 3, 4 bolted to the flanges 7, 8 and spiders 9 within the ends 5, 6 which are bolted together by a tie bolt 10 which is tightened until the correct space between the ducts is achieved and whose head and nut have spherical surfaces 11 which fit into complementary surfaces in the spider bosses so as to permit tilting movement and precluding longitudinal movement of the ducts away from each other. The sleeve 12 is in two parts joined together at flanges 14 and are adjustable to give desired compression of the rings 15. In Fig. 4 (not shown), the sleeve is disposed between the flanged members, and the annular space is omitted. In Fig. 5 (not shown), the duct ends are arranged to overlap, one end having a reduced diameter. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the tie bolt is replaced by a turn-buckle having a central nut with opposite handed threads on either side, the nut being turned by means of a bar inserted through the gap between the duct ends.
