Abstract

683,175. Universal joints. KOPPE, P. Nov. 20, 1950 [Nov. 19, 1949], No. 28276/50. Class 80 (ii). A universal joint comprises helical springs 3, Fig. 2, engaging bearing parts 4 rotatable on axially directed bolts 5 secured alternately to driving and driven discs 1, 2. The bolts 5 are seated in conical recesses 8 whose bases in each case are directed towards the opposite disc, in which aligned holes 10 are also provided; the bolts are passed axially through these holes on assembling the joint, e.g. the bolts to be secured in the conical recesses 8 of the driven disc are passed through the corresponding holes 10 in the driving disc. In a modified form the bolts 5 are replaced by grooved pins. The rotatable bearing parts 4.include pegs 6 on which the springs 3 fit with clearance, the ends of the pegs, consisting of part-cylindrical surfaces BG, Fig. 4, merging into planes GS tangential to these surfaces. The lengths of the pegs 6 are so chosen that, on application of a large load moment, the pegs meet at the point B before the springs 3 are collapsed, and then roll upon each other over the surfaces BG while the bearing parts 4 rotate upon the bolts 5.
