Abstract

551,342. Resilient joints. SILENTBLOC, Ltd., TRIER, V. A., and GRAHAM, S. J. G. Aug. 14, 1941, No. 10338. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] A flexible coupling comprises a number of flexible studs each consisting of metal end portions adapted to engage the parts to be connected and a central rubber portion bonded to the end portions, the studs being so disposed that the rubber is either in tension or compression and not in shear. Flanges A, B on the shafts to be connected are each provided on their adjacent faces with three similar lugs A\ B<SP>1</SP> the lugs one one flange alternating with those on the other and all the lugs being at the same radial distance. The lugs are slotted at A<SP>2</SP> B<SP>2</SP> to receive screw-threaded extensions E<SP>2</SP> of metal and pieces E<SP>1</SP> which are bonded to a central rubber portion E. The lugs are recessed on their outer faces to receive locating washers C, D. The extensions E<SP>2</SP> are squared where they pass through the slots. A ball and socket centralizing device may be provided. The studs are so disposed in the coupling that the longer axis forms a chord. If the rubber should fail, the drive could be taken by up the lugs A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP>.
