Abstract

357,004. Rod couplings. WARD, E. A., 124, Brearley Street, Birmingham. Nov. 15, 1930, No. 34419. [Class 99 (i).] A shaft for threading conduits, clearing drains, &c., comprises a number of rods which are coupled together by resilient connections permitting a universal angular movement of the rods. In the form shown in Fig. 5 the rods 1, 2 are connected by a bolt 8 threaded through relatively large holes 6, 7 in terminal jointing elements 3, 4 secured to the rods, a compression spring 10 being disposed around the bolt and between the head thereof and the inner face of the element 3. Relative rotation of the rods is prevented by a pair of pins 11 carried by the element 4 and engaging holes 12 in the element 3, and dirt is prevented from entering between the joint faces by an annular flange on the element 4 engaging a channel 14 in the other one. The bolt 8 may be screwed into the element 4, Fig. 7, and the latter formed with a screwed extension 15 to engage a threaded socket 16 on the adjacent section. In a modification, Fig. 8, a third element 17 is disposed between the elements 3, 4, the bolt 8 passing through all three elements and a spring 10 being provided at one or both ends thereof. Fig. 9 shows a further modification. The various joint elements may be formed with cooperating concave and convex faces to provide a ball-joint action.
