Abstract
352,360. Rod couplings. WARD, E. A., 124, Brearley Street, Birmingham. Nov. 6, 1930, No. 33359. [Class 99 (i).] In a flexible shaft for cleaning drains &c. of the kind made up of a number of cane &c. rods 5 coupled together by ferrules 1, 2, Fig. 1, disposed on the ends thereof and having complementary connecting parts 3, 4, the ferrules are secured to the rods by pressing or forcing the wall thereof inwards at 7 to form a rib 8 which embeds itself into the surface of the rod. Alternatively the rod is formed with a peripheral groove into which the wall of the ferrule is depressed. A tapered sleeve 9 having a cylindrical bore may be driven into the end of each rod before or during application of the ferrule, and a sleeve 10, Fig. 5, may be interposed between the ferrule and rod. The end of the rod is reduced to receive the sleeve 10 which is retained in place by pressing an annular rib 11 therein which embeds itself into the rod, and the ferrule may also be pressed at 13 into the groove of the sleeve formed by the said rib 11.
