Abstract

800,972. Universal joints. CLAYTONWRIGHT, Ltd., H. July 5, 1956 [May 12, 1955], No. 13705/55. Class 80 (2). A universal joint comprises two inner coupling members 10 adapted to be connected to, or forming the ends of, two shafts, an outer sleeve 14 and an intermediate sleeve 16 of rubber &c. connecting the inner members, the rubber sleeve being bonded to the inner members and radially compressed within the outer sleeve. In the form shown, the outer sleeve 14 is in two semi-cylindrical parts. The universal joint is assembled in a mould in which the rubber sleeve 16 is bonded to the inner and outer members 10, 14, the adjacent ends of the inner members 11 abutting, Fig. 1 (not shown). The two halves of the surrounding sleeve 14 are then drawn towards each other by a surrounding clamping ring 15 to compress the rubber sleeve 16. The rubber comprising the sleeve 16 is thus forced to flow axially of the joint, and forms a flange-like portion 18 which separates the two coupling-members 10. In a modification, Figs. 5, 6 (not shown), the outer sleeve 14 is in one piece and is contracted, e.g. by forcing through a tapered die, after the bonding process. In another modification, Figs. 7, 8 (also not shown), the rubber sleeve is bonded only to the two inner members 10, and a non-metallic washer of a material such as nylon is inserted in the rubber 18 between the adjacent ends of the coupling-members 10.
