Abstract

907,217. Universal joints. SILENTBLOC Ltd. July 14, 1959 [July 21, 1958; Sept. 4, 1958], Nos. 23408/58 and 28484/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXXII] A flexible joint for resilient shaft couplings &c. comprises a rigid inner member 17, Fig. 4, of part-spherical or barrel shape and an outer cylindrical sleeve 20 with a bonded intermediate bushing 10 of resilient material having greater thickness towards its ends. In one example the bushing 10, Fig. 1, in its free state is of cylindrical inner form 11 and concave on its outer surface 18 and is forced over the inner member 17 during assembly and secured by adhesives. Alternatively the bushing may be moulded on the inner member 17. The bushing is compressed axially at one or both ends by washers 27 held in position by oirclips 23. In a modification (not shown) one end of the outer sleeve 20 is closed by an end wall which is shaped to retain the end of the bush. In another example a resilient bush 71, Fig. 9, is moulded around an inner spherical bush 61 arranged in the mould between end rings 72, 73 and the assembly is inserted in an outer cylindrical casing 70 and held in position by flanging the ends as at 76.
