Abstract

721,163. Pipe joints. PERCIVAL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., WOTTON, J., and BEZANT, E. April 7, 1953. [Jan. 24, 1952] No. 2015/52 Class 99 (1). In a joint in which a sealing ring 27 is compressed in a recess formed by a conical socket 13 and surfaces on a tubular joint member 20 by relative axial movement of tne socket and joint member, the sealing ring has before deformation, a cross-section, e:g., rectangular, different from the recess, a maximum diameter less than that of the recess, and, at an intermediate radial position of the recess, a greater axial dimension than the recess. The joint member 20 may comprise the spigot end of a pipe to be connected to a pipe fitting 11. In the construction shown a separate tubular member 20 has an end 23 engaging within the socket 13 and an end 22 engaging within the flared end 14 of a pipe 10. A sealing ring 26 is compressed similarly to the ring 27 in the flared end 14, the end walls of the recesses being formed by an intermediate flange 21 of the tube 20. The joint is completed by a collar 15 and coupling nut 16. The flange 21 is clamped between the collar 15 and fitting 11, and is designed to limit the deformation of the rings so as not completely to fill the recesses.
