Abstract

520,340. Universal joints. LAYCOCK ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and CHARLESWORTH, T. R. Oct. 18, 1938, No. 30088. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] In a flexible mechanical joint comprising one or more hollow, cylindrical rubber bushes formed with annular end recesses, each bush 8, Fig. 1, is assembled on a rigid sleeve 11 and is forced through a guide-funnel 14 into a cell 5 which is of smaller diameter than the undeformed bush and is formed with flanges 6. The cell may consist of a tubular member secured to a member 7 of the joint, or the cell may be formed in the member. The bush and funnel are lubricated, and the bush is forced into the cell by means of the plunger 15 of a press. The bush may be provided with metallic gauze and canvas reinforcements 9, 10.
