Abstract

434,583. Flexible-unjointed hinges. ANDRE (SILENTBLOC), Ltd., and JELLEY, S. W., Victoria Gardens, Ladbroke Road, Notting Hill Gate, London. March 27, 1935, No. 9555. [Class 65 (ii)] In a flexible joint or support of the kind comprising an outer member A with a cylindrical bore, an inner member B and a rubber or like bushing D permanently disposed between the two members under radial compression so as to adhere to them, the inner member B having an annular abutment B<1> while the outer member A has an annular abutment A<1> for preventing displacement of the rubber and transmitting axial thrusts, the rubber-engaging face of the inner abutment B<1> has an axial cross-section curved or inclined to the axis of the joint so that its outer circumferential portion lies further from the end of the rubber bushing than its inner circumferential portion. The end of the rubber bushing adjacent to this abutment is preferably similarly curved or inclined in the opposite direction. This arrangement provides a gradually increasing contact area between the abutment and bushing as the axial thrust increases, and allows greater axial movement of the parts. With a similar object the other end of the bushing is preferably curved or inclined in axial section so that its outer circumferential portion is normally further from the centre of its length than the inner portion, and the outer abutment A<1>, with which it engages, is suitably shaped to give a progressively increasing contact area and its outer circumferential portion is formed as an annular channel to receive an annular rib on the corresponding part of the rubber bushing, as shown. Relative movement of the parts on release of any axial load is limited, in the form shown, by an abutment B<2> and rubber washer C on the member B engaging the outer abutment A<1>. Two such joints may be combined end to end in opposed relation, to oppose axial forces in both directions, with common outer and inner members, the inner abutments being either at the ends or the centre of the combined device with the outer abutments arranged accordingly.
