Abstract

599,251. Assembling force fits ; jointing. AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA KULLAGERFABRIKEN. Dec. 24, 1943, No. 21676. Convention date, Dec: 31, 1942. [Class 83 (iv)] To facilitate the separation and assembly of parts that engage with a force, shrunk, &c. fit, an intermediate member is employed between the joint surfaces and means are provided to supply fluid under pressure to one joint surface. The intermediate member 9, Fig. 1, is thin enough to be easily contracted on to the shafts 1, 2 by pressure from the sleeve 5 and is about half as long again as the sleeve. It is assembled initially on the shaft 1 with about one-third of its length projecting and the sleeve 5 is shrunk &c. fitted over it so as to be entirely over the shaft 1. The shaft 2 is now entered into the member 9 to abut the shaft 1 and connection is made at 8 to a source of oil under pressure sufficient substantially to relieve metallic pressure between the parts 5, 9 by forcing its way, by the duct 6 and annular recess 7, between them. The sleeve 5 is now moved into position over both shaft ends as shown in the Figure. The ends of the bore in the sleeve 5 are slightly flared at 10. This has the effect of increasing somewhat the specific pressure between the surfaces near the ends and reduces endways leakage of oil. In a modification, the interposed member has a tapered internal surface and the sleeve 5 is tapered internally to correspond. The duct 6 is placed somewhat nearer the smaller end and, since the taper permits assembly and separation with only a small axial movement to apply or relieve the pressure, pressure oil may be used to effect the assembly without the use of heat &c. The taper may be such that the axial component of the pressure due to the oil will itself suffice to effect separation of the parts. The invention may also be used when heavy press, shrunk or like fits are required such as in mounting fly-wheels on, and removing them from, shafts. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a further form of shaft coupling employing a taper member 11, Fig. 6 (Cancelled), and a sleeve 5 tapered correspondingly to the bore to maintain an equal thickness of metal. The duct. 6 is centrally placed and leads to a shallow helical distributing channel 19 terminating just short of the flared. ends of the sleeve. In the case of a coupling flange, the duct leads through the flange to a groove situated at this end of the coupling. The inner race 29, Fig. 8 (Cancelled),of a roller bearing is mounted on the end of a shaft 26 by an interposed taper sleeve 28 split at 27 and having a duct 30, 31 leading to both surfaces. The subject-matter of Specification 599,304 is also comprised. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
