Abstract

956,894. Universal joints. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. April 17 1963 [April 18, 1962], No. 15099/63. Heading F2U. An axially slidable universal joint has balls 3 in a cage 4 engaging an even number of opposite handed helical grooves 5 in an outer member 1 and an inner member 2, the balls engaging grooves of opposite hand in each member. The inner member 2 may have a double conical outer surface 10 with an intermediate radius 11 and the cage be of double conical section, or the inner and outer members may be double conical and the cage cylindrical. The ball apertures in the cage are of ball width axially and elongated transversely of the joint and their bearing surface may be thickened by ribs or by inward bending of the cage in the vicinity of the balls.
