Abstract

1339751 Universal joints; flexible shafts GKN TRANSMISSIONS Ltd 8 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969 7 March 1970] 60435/69 and 11054/70 Heading F2U A propeller shaft comprises two universal joints as in claim 1 of Specification 1,072,144 of which the outer members are connected by tube means 43 ... 45, and each universal joint has a flexible seal 28 joining the inner and outer members. Relative axial movement of the members of each universal joint may be limited by a lip 37 on the seal 28 engaging the balls 12 and by a resilient cap 23 on the inner member 10 engaging an end closure 16 of the outer member 40. The tube means 43... 45 may comprise a single tube welded at 41 to the members 40 or by a plurality of tubes each connected to its adjacent tube, which is of different diameter, by compressed resilient rings 45. The seal 28 may be lubricant tight and define a space with members 10, 11 containing lubricant which damps relative axial movement. The members 40 may be electrochemically machined and parts 35, 43 attached by electromagnetic deformation.
