Abstract

632,541. Resilient mountings. SILENTBLOC, Ltd., and TRIER, V. A. Sept. 3, 1947, No. 24318. [Class 108 (iii)] In a flexible bearing comprising substantially concentric inner and outer members with one or more rubber or like bushes disposed in the annular space between them and caused to adhere to them so as to permit relative movement between the inner and outer members by reason of intermolecular deformation in the rubber, the outer surface of the inner member is cylindrical, the inner surface of the outer member is frusto-conical over a part or the whole of its length and the rubber bush or each rubber bush is stretched over the cylindrical inner member and is maintained in close frictional contact therewith and with the outer member by being compressed axially. In the arrangement shown, two rubber bushes A, each having a cylindrical bore, a frusto-conical outer surface and a flange A3 are stretched on to metallic inner members B, the external diameters of which are appreciably greater than the initial diameters of the bushes A. The inner surface of each bush may be made frusto-conical, alternatively or additionally, to the outer surface. The assembled bushings are inserted into an outer member C formed at each end with a frusto-conical bore of slightly smaller mean diameter than that of the outer surface of each bush A and the two bushings are forced inwardly of the member C by means of side plates E and a bolt D. In a modification, the outer face of the flange A3 in its uncompressed state may be of somewhat convex form. In another modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the edge of the cylindrical bore may be rounded at the flanged end of each rubber bush and each inner member may be formed with an integral flange which engages with the flange of the bush. Each inner member may also be formed with one or more longitudinally extending slots. In further modifications (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) each inner member is flanged, as above, and the inner ends of each bush may be rounded or formed with an internal chamfer, respectively. In another modification (Fig. 8, not shown), the outer surface of each bush may be formed partly frusto-conical and partly cylindrical, the bore at each end of the outer member being given a corresponding formation. In all arrangements, the outer circumferential surface or the exposed end face of each bush may be grooved or recessed to facilitate flow of the rubber under compression. According to the Provisional Specification the outer circumferential surface of the outer face of each bush or the bore of the outer member may or may not each have embedded in it reinforcing textile or metal fabric, such as metallic gauze.
