Abstract

730,534. Resilient joints. ANDRE RUBBER CO., Ltd. (Neidhart, H. J.). Nov. 16, 1953, No. 31778/53. Class 108 (3). The invention relates to rubber torsion joints of the type forming the subject of Specification 652,266. According to the invention, a plurality of shims upon which the rubber members roll, bear against, and are supported by, either the rigid outer member or the rigid inner member. In Fig. 7B the ends 10, 10a of the shims 4 are turned inwardly to form a stop to engage the inner member 2 according to a desired preload. In Fig. 9B the member 1 is of cylindrical crosssection. The necessary multilateral outer surfaces on which the rubber members 3 roll, is formed by the shims 4 which are of more solid construction, e.g. die-cast. Each of the shims 4 in Fig. 9B may be split at its narrowest point so that there are 8 shims instead of 4 (Fig. 9C, not shown). In Fig. 11C, sheet metal shims 4 having looped ends 13, are disposed in a cylindrical outer member. The loop may be formed at one end only (Fig. 11E, not shown). The end which is not looped may rest on the looped end of the adjacent shim (Fig. 11D, not shown). The ends 13 may, however, be in the form of rectilinear lugs (Fig. 8, not shown), disposed at right angles to the respective sides of the shim. The adjacent sides of each shim need not be at right angles (Fig. 12A, not shown). There may be a discontinuity, or step, formed in the surface on which the rubber members roll, at the junction of adjacent shims (Figs. 12A to 12E, not shown). In Fig. 15, stops 17 positively prevent movement of the shims 4 relative to the outer member 1 (otherwise they are retained by friction). The stops 17 may be of dove-tailed shape in crosssection. In assembly (Fig. 19), the rubber members 3 and shims 4 are held in position, under pressure by jaws 18 of a press. Axial pressure is then applied to slide the assembly into the outer member 1. In an alternative process (Fig. 21, not shown), the assembled inner member 2, rubber members 3, and shims 4, are slid through a tapering funnel into the outer member. In the assembly of a joint in which the shims are disposed between the rubber members 3 and the inner member 2 (Figs. 23, 26, not shown), the inner member 2 is inserted into an assembly of the remaining members preceded by a tapered leader member. The latter form of joint may be of the construction described in Specification 730,167. Specification 710,244 also is referred to.
