Abstract
808,807. Universal joints. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Dec. 28, 1955 [Oct. 5, 1954], No. 28654/54. Class 80 (2). A Hooke's joint for motor cars &c. comprises a central spider having radially directed arms 2 to each of which is bonded a frusto-conical rubber bush 3 with its thickest portion lying radially outwards, an axially split two-part frusto-conical shell 5 surrounding each bush and being secured to yokes 15 on the connected shaft ends by bolts 19. The split frusto-conical shells 5 are bonded to the rubber bushes 3, which are compressed radially on to the spider arms 2. Holes 18 in the yokes 15 through which the bolts 19 are passed are arranged to be positioned radially inwards of bolt holes 12 in the shells 5 before the joint is assembled. When connecting the parts of the joint, the shells 5 are forced radially outwards by a suitable tool to line up the bolt holes 12, 18, and the bolts 19 are then inserted. Some radial compression of the rubber bushes 3 is thereby effected. On tightening the bolts 19, the two parts of each shell 5 are squeezed together and the bushes 3 are still further radially compressed.
