Abstract
646,788. Pipe joints. BROCKWAY CO. June 25, 1947, No. 16778. Convention date, Aug. 21, 1946. [Class 99(i)] In a joint of the kind in which a flared pipe end is clamped against the conical seat 16 of a fitting 10, and in which the pipe is flared by drawing it up on to the seat, a ferrule 23 is adapted to be compressed to grip the pipe by the initial movement of the coupling nut 21. The ferrule may be split and internally roughened and is contracted by the co-operation of inclined shoulders 25, 30, with shoulders 26, 31 on nut and fitting, and by the sleeve extension 17 of the fitting. The pipe end when flared fits into the conical recess 24 in the ferrule. In a modification adapted for the use of a standard fitting 10a, Fig. 6, the contracting sleeve 17a is separate from the fitting, engages at one end the conical seat 16a, and is connected to the ferrule 23a by a frangible web 39 which is broken during the initial movement of the nut. A recess 40 receives the flared pipe end. Other modifications for use with standard fittings are described.
