594,482. Hose-end fittings. BELL'S ASBESTOS & ENGINEERING, Ltd., and DAVEY, A..C. V. March 27, 1945, No. 7679. [Class 99 (i)] A device for attaching end fittings, couplings or the like to hoses, Fig. 1, has a plurality of wedgeshaped clamping members 4 on which a sleeve 10, with a flared outer end, is slid to close together the clamping members , and grip the hose between the latter and a tailpiece inside the hose. The clamping members may be made separately or from a tube, Fig. 3, which has an outer cylindrical surface, inner tapered and cylindrical surfaces 2 and 2a respectively and slots 3 cut in from the thicker end. The finger or clamping members 4 are then bent outwardly until the tapered portion of the bore becomes cylindrical. Alternatively the outer bore may be turned to a taper and the inner bore cylindrical and the slots cut as above. For a tightfitting clamping member the outside as well as the inside may be cut in the taper and then slotted as above. The slots may be formed helically or straight. In a modification a washer may be placed on the tailpiece tight against the pipe end and an extension of the outer sleeve is then spun over this washer. The washer may be formed integral with the tailpiece in the form of a flange. For joining two hoses, two outer sleeves are employed to slide on either end of a clamping member slotted from the centre outwardly.
