Abstract

556,385. Pipe couplings. MELSOM, W. A., and BOWDEN (ENGINEERS), Ltd. April 3, 1942, No. 6914/43. Divided out of and addition to 550,891. [Class 99 (i)] In hose couplings wherein the hose pipe is gripped between a metal insert 6 and sleeve 4 compressed thereon, a part of the hose having the rubber removed so as to leave the bare reinforcing-braiding 3 to be gripped at that part, as described in the parent Specification, the bared portion is gripped only by a ring or tube 5 separate from the sleeve 4. The braiding may be forced into a groove 7 in the insert 6, or around a rib thereon. The ring 5 is formed at the inner end with an enlarged bore 8 having a sloping connection 9 leading to the main bore 10 and serving to confine the braiding as it is inserted into the end 8. In modifications, the enlarged bore 8 may be provided at the end of the sleeve 4; or the ring 5 may be arranged between the sleeve 4 and the braiding. Compressed fibre, closely-woven canvas &c. may be introduced between the braiding and the insert. Specifications 540,489, 540,490 and 540,492 are referred to.
