Abstract

818,819. Pipe joints. MINISTER OF SUPPLY. Sept. 10, 1957 [Sept. 10, 1956; Sept. 27, 1956 ; Oct. 18, 1958], Nos. 27587/56, 29521/56 and 31707/56. Class 99(1). A pipe 1 is gripped by a split, wedge-action, externally screw-threaded sleeve 2 engaged by an internal correspondingly screw-threaded sleeve 3, an axial thrust producing relative movement between the sleeves and causing sleeve 2 to contract on the pipe and compress an O-ring 5. The ring 2 is formed of a hollow cylinder which is helically slit thus dividing it into coils, or it may be made of closely wound coils of metal strip, the outer edges inclined so as to engage the wedge-shaped screwthread 3d of sleeve 3. A spacing collar 6 may be inserted between ring 5 and sleeve 2, sleeve 2 being screwed into sleeve 3 and the assembly then placed on the pipe. An outer sleeve 4 is screwed on to sleeve 3 and imparts an axial thrust to the sleeve 2 by engaging a ring 7. In modifications, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ring 7 may be formed integrally with the sleeve 2 which is provided with a number of longitudinal slits and in Fig. 3 (not shown), the connection is used for a rubber hose pipe which is gripped between a sleeve and a reinforcing insert engaged within the pipe bore to prevent collapse.
