Abstract
793,309. Pipe couplings. BRISTOL AIRCRAFT, Ltd. Feb. 13, 1956 [Feb. 18, 1955], No. 4974/55. Class 99(1). A pipe coupling comprises a ferrule 3 having a thickness between 1 and 2 times the thickness of the pipe to be coupled, a bore substantially equal to that of the pipe, and a smooth, outer, cylindrical surface 5 with chamfered or rounded edges 6, and sleeves 9, 10 respectively provided with external and internal screw-threads. Each sleeve is formed internally with a throat 12 and an enlargement 13 so as to provide an axiallycontractible recess to contain the ferrule and at least one expanded pipe end 14 fitting over the ferrule, a major part of the surface of the recess of a length greater than half that of the ferrule, being formed on one of the sleeves, that part being, for at least part of the length thereof furthest from the throat of the sleeve upon which it is formed, of a diameter equal to that of the ferrule plus twice the thickness of the pipe. As shown in Fig. 1, the enlargement 13 in the sleeve 9 extends beyond the end of the pipe 1 and forms with the ferrule an annular space which receives the enlarged portion of the pipe 2. In modifications, (a) the bore of the sleeve 10 is extended to embrace the expanded portions of both pipes, and (b) the sleeve 9, Fig. 3, screws into a fitting 101 having a bore 21 for the reception of the expanded part 14 of the pipe 1 and a bore 18 into which fits a part of the ferrule 3.
