Abstract
546,306. Pipe couplings. ROE & CO., Ltd., A. V., and REDRUP, C. B. March 3; 1941, No. 2839. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] In a pipe joint of the type in which the end of the pipe b is flared and engaged by internal and external coned surfaces c, d, an upsetting pressure is applied to the end of the flared pipe to cause a thickening of the walls, as indicated at a, so that after the coned members have been tightened up the tapered ends have a substantially uniform thickness. The ends of the pipes may also be spun over both inside and outside. The internal cone may be on a double-coned element, one cone entering the pipe and the other abutting against a conical surface in the coupling-device. The pipe end may be flared by means of a cone f, Fig. 4, which is rotated by a handle g and fed forwards by a screw hand handle i. The cone f is then replaced by an upsetting-tool j, Fig. 5, having rounded faces k.
