Abstract

819,421. Pipe joints. WHITEHOUSE INDUSTRIES Ltd., and KING, J. L. March 12, 1956 [March 11, 1955], No. 7141/55. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XXV] In a metal pipe coupling comprising a union nut 1 screwed on to a part 10 to clamp the belled ends of pipes 11, 12, between an olive 13 and a ring 14 and the part 10, the nut is formed with a number of slots or saw-cuts 7 transverse to the axis of the nut and extending through the wall thereof. Prior to putting the nut into use the slots are partially closed to produce a deformation of the screw-threads of the nut. In screwing the nut on to the part 10 the slotted walls thereof are slightly elongated as the screw-threads are forced to conform one with the other thereby putting the walls in a state of strain and preventing the nut from working loose. The slots may be in planes not parallel to one another and/or not normal to the axis of the nut, and the slots may be curved or otherwise shaped or formed. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 738,374 [Group XXV].
