Abstract
378,898. Pipe joints. KIRK, W. J., 9, Uxbridge Road, Kingston-on-Thames, and LAMONT, B. N. R., 23, St. Philips Road, Surbiton, Surrey. Feb. 7, 1931, Nos. 16384 and 17944. Divided on 3977/31. [Class 99 (i).] A resilient metal sleeve S is compressed axially by coupling members 1, 2 in such a way that, when the joint is tightened, the sleeve has an arch form in section and contacts with the pipe at its ends 6, outwardly flared surfaces 4 on the coupling members engaging the sleeve at zones a short distance from each end. Glands 3 may be interposed between the coupling members and the sleeve. The face of the gland may be stepped so that it contacts with the sleeve at a number of points instead of at the surface 4. Two pipes are coupled by loose flanges 10, Fig. 6, and bolts 11, a sleeve on each pipe being compressed between the flanges or glands 13 and a ring R having a flange T for centring the joint. One of the glands may be shaped to engage an existing fitting such as a conical socket 15, Fig. 7b. The conical tip of the hard metal gland 14 may be separate from the gland and of soft metal. The conical face of the gland may be stepped. The joint may be made in a junction piece for tubular scaffolding, the bores of which may be arranged so as not to intersect. The use of such joints in a scaffolding erection is illustrated.
