Abstract

577,489. Flexible couplings. TUSTIN, A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 2, 1941, No. 12767. [Class 80 (i)] A flexible coupling between shafts 1, 2, comprises discs 3, 4, fixed to the shafts and having abutment pins 6, 7, which enter arcuate slots 8, 9, in a disc 5 mounted freely on one of the shafts. Spiral springs 10, 11, have their inner ends fixed to the hub of the disc 5, and their outer ends 13, 14 bear against blocks 15, 16, carried by the abutment pins 6, 7. The spring are prestressed so that when the torque transmitted through the coupling is below a predetermined value the abutments 6, 7, are held against one end of the slots 8, 9, as shown in Fig 2, and the coupling rotates solidly with the shafts. When this torque is exceeded the springs flex and relative movement occurs between the shafts 1, 2. The shafts reset themselves to the initial relative position when the torque again falls below the predetermined value. The coupling functions in both directions of rotation, and may be applied to the control device described in Specification 577,312, [Group XXXVII]. The coupling may act as a universal coupling to allow for axial misalignment of the shafts. The slots 8, 9, may extend more than 180 degrees and may overlap one another.
