Abstract

660,560. Universal joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. Nov. 21, 1947 [Nov. 21, 1946], No. 34490/46. Class 80 (ii) [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] A resilient coupling comprises at least three rigid tubular elements 1, 2, 3 arranged one within the other, with their axes substantially parallel, and each element bonded to the neighbouring element by longitudinal strips of rubber 4, 5 spaced so that relative movement in any plane normal to the axis stresses some of the strips in shear. The strips 4, 5 may be joined by thin layers 4a, 5a bonded to the adjacent tubular elements; these layers acting in compression when excess shear strain in the strips allows'the tubular members to contact the layers. The tubes 1, 2, 3 may be axially displaced during the moulding operation and brought into line on assembly to prestress the rubber. In an embodiment, resilience is given to a wheel rim 18 carried by a hub 14 by the use of a plurality of the units shown in Fig. 1 spaced circumferentially in an inwardly projecting flange of the rim, the central tube of the unit being connected by a bolt 13 to the flanges 14a, 15 of the hub. To allow full resilience, rubber washers 19 are located between the end faces of the units and the adjacent flanges. Specification 660,606, [Group XXXIV], is referred to.
