Abstract

303,656. Rowland, T. C. E., and Parker, H. Jan. 14, 1928. Shaft couplings; universal joints.-A resilient flexible coupling is formed by replacing the fabric discs commonly employed between spiders on shaft ends by a disc-shaped self-contained elastic unit. An inner member 1 has arms 3 extending outwardly between arms 4 extending inwardly from an outer member 2. The arms 3, 4 have bolt holes 8, 9, respectively, for attachment to the two spiders or brackets on the shaft ends. The opposed faces of the arms 3, 4 are formed as box-like housings 5, 6 each adapted to receive one end of an elastic block 7. Such housings are preferably open at one side and closed as by a plate 10. In the application to vehicles where universal movement is required, there is a spherical joint at 13, 14 between the members 1, 2. As applied to driving magnetos, these spherical joints are omitted.
