662,337. Universal joints. S.A.G.A. SOC. APPLICAZIONI GOMMA, ANTIVIBRANTI. Jan. 17, 1949 [Feb. 13, 1948], No. 1315/49. Class 80 (ii) A flexible shaft coupling comprises rectilinear rubber blocks 5, of circular, elliptical or other cross-section, arranged between thin plates 11 connected alternately to arms 1 and 2 on the two shaft ends, so as to form a closed polygon. The blocks are bonded to the plates 11, or are secured thereto by bolts or rivets 22, Fig. 5. The plates 11 may have screwed spindle extensions 17, Fig. 2, secured to the arms 1 and 2 by nuts 18; or each plate may be in two superposed parts 23, 24, Fig. 5, shaped to leave a passageway 25 for a bolt connected to the arm. Radial holes 21, Fig. 5, may be provided in the blocks so as to increase the flexibility of the joint. Each block may comprise a number of subsegments separated by rigid plates, in which case the torsional flexibility of the joint is reduced. The blocks may be precompressed to such an extent that none of the blocks will be under tension during operation of the joint.
