[Class 79 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] Transverse axle-shafts 15, connecting the differential 3 to the rear or front driving-wheel 17, are provided at one or both ends with universal joints comprising adhesive rubber rings 14, so dimensioned as to permit considerable axial and torsional elasticity. In the case of a front driving and steering wheel, the outer joint may be replaced by a single Hooke's joint, or by a known constant velocity-ratio joint. In the case of a rear " swinging-axle " drive, the outer joint is omitted, the axle-shaft being connected directly to the wheel. The joint may also be used on the propeller-shaft.
