618,374. Universal joints. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV-UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Oct. 29, 1946, No. 32098. Convention date, Nov. 5, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] In a universal joint the driving member has two pairs of diametrically opposed pin-and-slot connections with two intermediate members having similar connections with the driven member, the two sets of connections being in planes passing through the axis of revolution, but at an angle to each other. A two-part driving gear 6 for a railway vehicle has a resilient connection through the springs 24 with the portions 20, 21 of the gear rim, which have diametrically opposed slots 15, 17. These slots are engaged by the pins 14, 16 respectively of two intermediate slide frames 4, 5 having diametrically opposed driving slots 11, 13 connected through the pins 10, 12 and arms 2, 3 to the driven axle shaft 1. The angle alpha between the planes of the pins 10 and 12 need not be a right angle, but may be chosen so that the out-of-balance of the drive compensates for other out-of-balance forces. The pins may be connected to the slots through leaf spring-loaded slipper blocks.
