Abstract

719,123. Universal joints. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIV - UND MASCHINENFABRIK. Nov. 17, 1952 [Dec. 17, 1951], No. 28937/52. Class 80 (2) [Also in Group XXXI] A universal joint, particularly for the axle drives of rail vehicles, comprises at least six (as shown, eight) rubber members 14 alternately connected to arms 17a, 18 on the two shafts of the joint and is characterized by the arms being arranged radially to lie within a disc-shaped space defined by the extremities of the rubber members on rotation of the coupling, so that although lying in separate parallel planes, normally perpendicular to the main axis of the joint and without the arms of one shaft projecting between the arms of the other shaft, together the two sets of arms do not require in the axial direction a constructional length greater than that of the rubber members. The rubber members 14 are bonded to plates 15, as shown in Fig. 3 which is an arcuate section along the line III ... III of Fig. 1, the plates being connected alternately by screw threaded means to the arms 17a, 18 of the two shafts. The crosssection of the rubber members 14 is, in the form shown, rectangular, but may alternatively be circular, elliptical or the like. As described applied to the axle drive of a rail vehicle, an electric motor has a hollow drive shaft connected by a universal joint according to the invention to one end of a shaft within it, the other end of this shaft being connected by a second, similar, universal joint to a gear in a train transmitting drive to the vehicle axle.
